Inmates V. Inmates Many factors contribute to inmates turning against each other. Many times, it can be gang or race rivalry. Not all jails have effective architecture and technology that allows correction officers to surveil 24/7. Unfortunately, many prisoners get their hands on weapons, or they make their own. These are used to cut, or puncture, often causing fatal wounds to the other inmate.

  • Staff V. Inmates - These include rapes, beatings, and mental abuse from officers against inmates. Most of these crimes are reported from Maximum security inmates (Siegel, p201, 2018). These assaults often occur after a riot or major disturbances from inmates.
  • Self-Inflicted Violence This refers to inmates who physically harm themselves. Some might cut or burn themselves. The worse scenario is when a prisoner commits suicide. Many times, the inmates loose hope. Some come into the prisons facing serious charges and they know they have no chances of making it back out alive anyway.

Prisons are bound to be at risk for violence no matter what because, of the types of people they house. However, if I had the power, I would start safety with the way the jails are built, the technology that is used and the quality of correction staff that is employed. Most officers are good but have no training. When they do not know how to mentally deal with tough prisoners they might recur to violence. So, for this reason ongoing staff training would be a program I would like to develop. Additionally, I would like to use prisoners who have skills (construction, carpentry, music, sports etc) to train other inmates. This would add self-worth to the inmates and a sense of purpose. Additionally, I would like to relieve some of the overcrowding by releasing SOME nonviolent offenders. People in jail for things like a weed charge should not be in jail -my opinion-. I would like the young, troubled inmates to finish their GED inside the prison. After that they are mandatory college /trade school would be included in probation terms. Regarding predator officers and inmates who sexually abuse others I would add jail time- The officer would be fired and heavily fined/ prison term.

A few types of prison violence is expressed by inmates one of them being inmate assaults on staff members. Statistics indicate inmates attack staff more often than other inmates. When we think inmates attacking a staff we often think of an inmate attacking an officer but that is not the only type of staff working at these type of facilities. Around September 15 2020 a nurse was attacked in Stockton prison located in California (Roslio Ahumada, 2020). Another type of prison violence expressed by inmates are staff assaults on inmates. Some staff members abuse their power and apply force when it is not necessary. It was also found that sexual assaults also happen by some staff members. There is no way of knowing for sure how much brutality is actually occurring because the staff members know the blind spots of the prison and they can easily say the inmate is lying. Opening up an investigation as well will cause unwanted attention to the prison. Self inflicted violence is also expressed by inmates. It was found that inmates chose to hang themselves when they committed suicide, and white males were most likely the ones to commit suicide.

One program I would develop to ensure inmate on staff doesn't occur or is not as life threatening to the staff member, is to ensure all staff are trained in self defense and all staff members should carry pepper spray and are properly trained to use it. If inmates are aware that the staff are not so vulnerable they may think twice about attacking or the staff member will have a chance to protect him or herself.
