For example, Jason pleaded guilty to shoplifting but since no one was harmed and this was his first offense he was sentenced to probation. The Judge decided Jason must meet with his probation officer on a regular basis and maintain employment or else he will be jailed for his actions. Probation can easily be revoked if the individual does not comply and must display good behavior or potential to be considered for the course of action.

Boot camp is yet another option for those who have engaged in criminal activities are headed down the wrong path. Boot camps provide their participants with rigid training and strict discipline. Self-control, respect, and accountability are some of the benefits boot camp participants will endure upon completion. Boot camp is perfect for a troubled teen with behavioral issues such as disrespecting their parents or getting involved with the wrong crowd. Opposed to immediately calling the authorities, the parent will reach out to a boot camp where theyd help the child realize the importance of respecting authority and staying out of correctional facilities.

A fine or specified amount of money is given to criminals as a form of punishment. A criminal is given a fine for their criminal activity by a judge but the amount is determined based on what they are being accused of. For instance, while walking down the road Michael was stopped by a police officer who noticed he was holding a controlled substance. The incident led to Michael being charged with a drug possession. The minor drug offense allowed Michael to be fined five hundred dollars. Fines were established with hopes of offenders learning their lesson for not abiding by laws, by paying a fine they would most likely avoid committing the behavior again.

Electronic monitoring is a form of digital incarceration, mostly in the form of a wrist bracelet or ankle shackle, that can monitor a subjects location, and sometimes also their blood alcohol level or breath. Monitors are commonly used as a condition of pretrial release, or post-conviction supervision, like probation or parole. They are sometimes used as a mechanism for reducing jail and prison populations. Electronic monitoring, for example, has also been used to track juveniles, immigrants awaiting legal proceedings, adults in drug rehabilitation programs, and individuals accused or convicted of DUIs or domestic violence.

Home confinement pertains to any judicially or administratively enforced condition requiring a subject to remain in his or her residence for any part of the day. Home confinement can be possibly monitored with the help of electronic equipment or without it and may be inflicted as an alternative only to incarceration (Home Confinement Policy Manual, 1991). The goal of home confinement, like that of prison or jail, is to restrict an individual's freedom to a particular location, in this case the home.

Shock probation is a program that allows sentencing judges to reconsider the offender's original sentence to prison and then recall the inmate for a sentence to probation within the community. It is assumed that a short term or imprisonment would "shock" the offender into changing their criminal behavior. With shock probation, an offender is sent to prison, and then within a specified period of time, a judge can bring that offender back out for community supervision.
