Question:
- Prepare a network diagram of a certain project using PERT method (search the net for examples on PERT). The report should Include:
- Introduction to project planning and scheduling.
- List of activities at least (15) activites, the relationship between activities
- The duration of each activity; each activity will have 3 values (a, m, b) and the expected value for each activity duration will be calculated.
- Sample calculation
- Discussion of the results and stated in point 8 and 9 bellow.
- Conclusions and recommendations
- References
- Draw the network diagram using AON and AOA methods.
- Then calculating the project duration using PERT (use the three values of activity duration).
- Calculating expected time, standard deviation and variance for each activity.
- Calculate the project expected duration, standard deviation and variance using the three values of the activities duration (a, m, b) for PERT.
- Calculation the project duration for AOA and AON using only the m values for the activities duration; the most likely values for each activity.
- Determine the critical activities and the critical paths based on the above results.
- Discuss briefly the important of planning and its effects on the project impact on the economics and environment in general.
- Compare the different planning solution, select the best solution (most economical solution) and justify your selection.
- Examine the interest of the different parties in a projects, i.e. clients, main contractor, subcontractors and the consultant.
- Compare the requirements of the different parties in a construction project
- Allocate the required resources for each activity (assuming the minimum number of the required resources).
- Do resources leveling based on the comparison between all activities are executed on its ES and LS.
- Crash the project duration by reducing in 3 days, then determine the crash time and cost of the project.
3. General Requirements
A proper report, either neatly hand written or typed, should be submitted. Important references should be given through citations. Whenever necessary, sketches should be drawn with a ruler. Report should include a copy of this assignment paper and its Rubric, important input/output data and sketches.
6. Assignment Evaluation
While evaluating the assignment the following rubric will be used:
- Each criterion will be rated according to scores combined with levels of performance.
- The total score of the assignment is out of 30for the assignment.
Criteria | Points | Low (1) | Need improvement (2) | Good (3) | Excellent (4) |
Propose different engineering solution to the project network
| Show weak understanding of the project planning solution and its impact on the project economics and environment | Show little understanding of the project planning solution and its impact on the project economics and environment | Show good understanding of the project planning solution and its impact on the project economics and environment | Show excellent understanding of the project planning solution and its impact on the project economics and environment | |
Content of the report | Content conveys little of the assignment detail. | Content conveys some of the assignment detail. | Content conveys most of the assignment detail. | Content of the report conveys all of the detail of the assignment. | |
Ability to show engineering judgments to select from the different solution | Show weak ability to use his own judgment to justify his decision
| Show little ability to use his own judgment to justify his decision
| Show good ability to use his own judgment to justify his decision
| Show excellent ability to use his own judgment to justify his decision
