Problem 3(10 points)- Mass and energy balance in a refrigerant nozzle
Refrigerant 134a enters a well-insulated nozzle at 1.4MPa,60C, with a velocity of 37ms and exits at
120 kPa with a velocity of 460ms. Please answer the following.
a. Create a schematic for the nozzle and indicate the boundary that you would use to compute the
exit velocity for the R-134a passing through it. Include the mass and energy interactions across the
boundary.
b. Determine the enthalpy at the exit of the nozzle, in kJkg. Specify the final state (i.e. superheated
vapor, mix, etc.).
c. On a P-v diagram, represent the process that corresponds to the R-134a as it passes through the
nozzle.
d. If the exit diameter of the nozzle is 10 mm , determine the mass flow rate of R-134a entering the
nozzle, in kgmin.
