Problem Statement

Suppose the company you work for is designing a lathe$-$like

machine to make widgets $($Figure $1).$ To help ensure that the

machine does not break or cause excessive building

vibrations, you need to model the response of the machine,

but you are unsure about the model complexity you should

use. To help decide, you create three models of increasing

complexity and compare the responses.
