We have learnt about the importance of identifying key stakeholders. Building on that, we explored several mechanisms and techniques to facilitate stakeholder engagement successfully. In this small discussion, you have an opportunity to identify the purpose of stakeholder engagement in context and select an appropriate strategy based on the following scenario.

Scenario:

You have been brought on to a Public Health Reform Programme (PHRP) in South Africa, which seeks to improve government policies that affect the delivery quality of healthcare. The programme has three broad aims:

1. It seeks to improve people's access to healthcare.

2. It seeks to improve the quality of healthcare that people can readily access.

3. It seeks to provide more people with access to healthcare services.

The proposed solution to address these three objectives is to fundamentally reimagine and restructure the internal organisation of public health facilities to achieve better productvity and increased responsiveness (Ruff et al., 2011).

The research that has informed the programme's solution suggests that too much focus has been on barriers with funding typically faced by public health institutions. However, in seeking to reform public health, the focus cannot solely be on funding. It needs to broaden to include healthcare management systems that could, through reform, offer improved quality of care through gains in efficiency, effectiveness, and overall quality.

Key stakeholders that you have identified include patients and physicians, employees and employers, insurance organisations, pharmaceutical organisations, and the South African government. While the interrelationship between these key stakeholders and the public healthcare system is nuanced, you have been tasked with selecting strategies to facilitate each stakeholder's engagement in a kick-off meeting during the programme's Diagnostic Phase.
