Four Points of Interest from our Readings
My first point of interest comes from chapter 5 regarding complexity theory best practices. I learned that linear problems do not always require linear solutions. According to complexity theory, we exist in an open system which means there is always an element of randomness that we cannot account for (Curlee & Gordon, 2013). It is important to remember that there is not always one best solution to a problem, especially when challenged with a new or slightly different challenge that our existing processes and procedures cannot address.
Second point of interest comes from chapter 6 regarding leadership and complexity. One of the roles of a program manager is to feed into chaos and allow the creativity of teams to develop their own paths toward success (Curlee & Gordon, 2013). By embracing change and allowing micro-cultures to flourish within the various teams, the smaller groups have autonomy and do not require direct daily interaction with the program manager.
The third point of interest was found in chapter 9 about social teams and complexity. The difference between rules based and entrepreneurial teams was discussed in detail. Rules based teams are closed off to outside entities, and do not share information with others. Unless absolutely necessary, this is a disadvantage when compared to entrepreneurial teams who are open, and have numerous outside resources to share information with. Curlee and Gordon (2013) described how open teams gain more trust and support when developing, planning, launching or selling a product due to the strength of the collaborating through a diverse network from different backgrounds and expertise.
Lastly, my fourth point of interest came from chapter 12 and discussed the shaping of culture through myths and metaphors. Using these in a complex organization allows the program manager to merge culture with vision which can transform an organization beyond the needs of the program (Curlee & Gordon, 2013). It is interesting how a manager can craft details of overcoming obstacles with a few individuals such a surpassing a program milestone, describing effective employees, and thriving in complexity, then see how the story travels and spreads into a myth that drives teams and motivates individuals. This is similar to the butterfly effect in that by showing connections between small actions and impacts to the overall program, a program manager is able to promote change through little effort.
Mission Statement
In regard to the mission statement found on our course syllabus, I feel the faculty demonstrated high quality higher education with an emphasis on educating those in the military, veterans, and government civilians. Also, I have had more interaction in this college with my professors than in my previous university. I feel this course addressed the mission statement very well, by preparing the students for service and leadership positions in our society.
