Who to choose?
The manager of the Human Resources Department in XYZ Company is retiring.
Within the employee pool of the organisation three employees, all with more than five
years experience, have been identified as possible candidates for the position.
First, there is Thabo. He seems to be a typical behavioural Type B He is a training
officer with excellent people skills, but does fall behind with his work sometimes. He
is a good follower who follows all the rules and regulations of the organisation. He
organises all the training programmes of the organisation in a very methodical fashion.
He handles queries and training problems patiently and keeps the employees focused
on the reasons for selfdevelopment. He is creative in motivating employees to sign
up for training programmes offered by the organisation, although he emphasises that
employees should take their workload into account before signing up for new courses.
He stresses the importance of a balanced worklife relationship. The employees see
him as a humble mentor who will help where he could. They will often come to him for
advice, which he then discusses and thinks through with the employee to find the best
solution to a problem.
Then there is Duduzile, a typical behavioural Type A She is a real gogetter who is
literally always on the run. She works in the marketing department. The employees
know if she wants something done, it must be done quickly. She doesnt like to wait,
but is good at multitasking. She has a busy work schedule and often works after
hours. She can think on her feet when problems arise and make quick decisions
without thinking it through. She hardly ever takes lunch. During brainstorming
sessions, she never gives any input and regards it as a waste of time. The employees
often go to her if they have a problem that needs to be solved quickly. They often ask
her to speak to top management on their behalf if they feel there are pressing matters
to be solved. The employees see her as the opinion leader among them and follow
her decisions.
The last candidate for the position is good old Vuyo who has been working in the IT
department for many years. He is a typical behaviour Type C He follows instructions
without questioning reasons for decisions. He is excellent in his job due to his detailoriented nature. He is always on top of new developments in the technological sphere
and better systems without being asked. If there is a computer problem, there is only
one person that the employees prefer to go to He will find the problem and sort it out.
He has good relationships with the employees, but is seen as a bit of a loner. He
doesnt like to talk about himself or discuss personal matters with employees. He
always says: Spare me the gory details if someone wants to tell him something. Top
management likes him because he is very diligent and never gets involved in office
politics.
Who to choose?
All three of the above candidates have applied for the position of Human Resources
manager. The top management has asked you, as the Talent Manager in the
organisation, to provide them with advice on the candidates
Analyse the positive behaviours and negative behaviours of each of the above
candidates according to their behaviour types. Use examples from the case study
to prove your point.
Based on your analysis of the positive and negative behaviours of the three
candidates in the above case study and their relationships with colleagues,
provide management with a recommendation for the position. Substantiate your
recommendation with good reasons why you choose this candidate and what you
suggest to eliminate the negative behaviours of the candidate.
