Question 1
A multi-component mixture (molar flow rate of 100mol.hr) of Xylene, Styrene, Toluene and overhead/vapour separated in an array of three distillation columns. The mixture enters column 1. The compositions of the column 1 enters column 2 and the bottom/liquid enters column 3. The are as given in Table 1.
\table[[S/N,COMPONENT,MIXTURE,OVERHEAD/VAPOUR,BOTTOM/LIQUID,],[,,COLUMN 1,COLUMN 2,COLUMN 3,COLUMN 2,COLUMN 3],[1.,Xylene,10,12,17,15,22],[2.,Styrene,26,6,12,27,62],[3.,Toluene,42,50,47,45,14],[4.,Benzene,22,32,24,13,2]]
A. Draw a flow diagram of the process described above showing the inlet and outlet streams.
B. Obtain the molar flowrate of the overhead/vapour and bottom/liquid from columns 2 and 3.
Hint: Take Component Balance and solve the resulting equations using the Gaussian Elimination Method.
