Question 19 Energy intensity is considered a measure of the energy efficiency of a nation's economy. It measures the quantity of energy needed to produce one unit (usually one dollar) of gross domestic product (GDP). Energy intensity can be used to compare countries or monitor a country's energy efficiency over time. Most countries want to achieve economic growth with as low an energy intensity value as possible.

 

a. Use the map above to answer the questions:

1. Identify one country that shows energy intensity lower than 2 kWh/$.
2. Describe one variable that could be contributing to the low energy intensity of the country identified in (i).
3. Compare the energy intensity of the country identified in (i) with a country with an energy intensity higher than 2 kWh/$. Describe one possible reason for the observed difference in energy intensity. 

b. There are methods for conserving energy on a large scale that can affect energy intensity of a country. The table below shows conversion factors for different types of renewable and non-renewable energy. Use the table to answer the questions:

1. Improving the fuel economy of vehicles is one way of addressing energy intensity. Calculate the kilowatt-hour of energy available in 16 gallons of gasoline.
2. Calculate the amount of biofuel that could be used to provide the same amount of energy. Provide reasoning for using biofuel as an energy source instead of regular gasoline.
3. Describe two methods for conserving energy on a large-scale that could reduce the energy intensity of a household.
