question : critically analyize this response by your class mate.
mVirtual teams are work arrangements where team members are geographically dispersed, have limited face-to-face contact, and work interdependently through modern information technology. Virtual teams connect knowledge workers together over time, and distance to combine effort and achieve common goals. (Kreitner, & Kinicki, 2013).
Managers who rely on virtual teams do agree that face-to-face contact is essential to group development, and periodic face to-face interaction fosters social bonding among virtual team members and makes conflict resolution easier. Without the support and hands-on training from management virtual teams cannot succeed (Kreitner, & Kinicki, 2013).
Many companies feel that virtual work has become somewhat of a weakness because it lacks the face to face component. Companies like Yahoo, Bank of America, and IBM have ended its work-at-home policy and ordered everyone back into the office. Primarily, because upper management believes that more face to face interaction among employees will improve communication, collaboration, and teamwork (Miller & Rampell, 2013). A good virtual team recognizes that weak strategies and unclear management are common reasons why virtual teams can fail.
According to Goman (2012) there are five key practices to building a successful virtual team: Increase cross-cultural awareness, co-create team rules and norms, build virtual trust, mix communication mediums, and make the first meeting face to face. Collectively, I believe these practices will be effective with virtual collaboration; and I would build on these practices with an emphasis on building working relationships and trust amongst my team. To manage this process, I would periodically check-in with my team for support purposes, create a virtual presence, and schedule regular meetings.
