As a recent MIS graduate, youve been hired by the Hidalgo Trading Company. Hidalgo is an old but small company specializing in international import and export of a variety of specialty goods. Hidalgo also manufacturers a small variety of products. Hidalgo was founded in the early 1930s and has been based in New York for many decades. In 2019, the senior staff decided to relocate the organization to Nashville, TN.As part of the move to Nashville, the senior staff has decided to upgrade the technological infrastructure used by the organization. This decision resulted in your new job! FridayOn your first day at work, Tom Roberts, Jr. greats you. Tom is the great grandson of one of the five original vice presidents of the organization. Although Tom plans to retire within the next two years, he is excited about the move to Nashville and intrigued by the proposed infrastructure upgrade.As you tour the new facilities, Tom provides a brief background on current operating procedures. He notes that Hidalgo deals with a variety of companies around the world. Each of these manufacturing companies specializes in producing high quality niche products. For example, one company produces exceptional writing instruments such as fountain pens, mechanical pencils, and ball point pens. Other organizations provide a rather amazing variety of items, such as flashlights, guitars, pocketknives, backpacks, purses, straps (for guitars), camera cases, photographic equipment, and a variety of electronic equipment. Hidalgo also owns multiple manufacturing facilities which produce numerous outdoor-related items such as water filters and hiking boots. Tom explains that Hidalgo currently purchases (or trades) for products with other manufacturing companies and then sells goods to vendors around the world. This process has changed somewhat over the years initially most orders were placed via telegraph. Today, the company relies upon a combination of telephone, fax, and e-mail to exchange orders. Contact information is stored in a handful of rolodex units around the buildings (These do not always contain duplicate information which has resulted in confusion in the past). In addition, the senior staff have proposed a direct sales division; this would consist of an online store selling directly to the public. Tom notes that multiple new employees would be needed to make this happen.Next, Tom introduces you to another executive named Pat. Pat is a senior vice president in charge of trading. Although other employees deal with day to day trading, Pat oversees initial contacts with other organizations and with arranging for new products. Tom instructs you to spend the rest of the week working with Pat.Pat explains that shes currently setting up an arrangement with a company located in North Carolina. This company builds extremely nice BBQ grills and smokers; they also manufacture a large line of accessories. Pats overall plan is to sell products from this manufacturer to other brick and mortar stores in the US while also exporting those same products to retailers in Australia, Europe, and Japan. Unfortunately, this explanation takes quite a while; Pats phone rings every few minutes as employees of the other companies contact her. At the same time, she keeps receiving multiple email notifications. As you listen to her conversations, you realize that Pat is receiving feedback from several companies interested in selling these products and exchanging that with the manufacturer. In addition, several overseas calls seem to relate to shipping information about the products. After a while you become frustrated as Pat is repeating herself to different people. Finally, Pat turns to you and complains that there must be a better way. Tom and Pat invite you to lunch. While the three of you sit in a nearby restaurant, both Tom and Pat receive multiple phone calls. At one point, Pat logs her iPad into the restaurants free Wi-Fi service and begins exchanging information about the upcoming project. She also asks Tom to log his laptop in as she needs some extra input from him; Tom asks the server for help connecting his laptop to the restaurants Wi-Fi service, but seems surprised when the server explains that the restaurant does not provide Wi-Fi. Pat looks up in concern and explains shes using the restaurants free Wi-Fi. The server is positive that no Wi-Fi is available. Tom asks the server to look at his laptop anyway, and even provides the server with his user-id (Tom) and his password (password12345). After checking, the server notes that a Wi-Fi network sharing the restaurants name does exist the server then asks the store manager who confirms that the restaurant does not offer Wi-Fi services.Upon returning to the office, Tom takes you to a photocopy machine. He removes a single sheet of paper from a bulletin board and makes a copy for you. This sheet of paper contains a list of accounts that Hidalgo uses with various other companies; user ids and passwords are also included. Tom also points out the official Hidalgo email address which is used for all communication with external companies. That address is Hidalgo@yahoo.com. Tom informs you that as a member of the IT staff, youre expected to keep a copy of this information with you at all times he proudly removes a yellowed piece of paper from his wallet to show you his copy. In addition, he hands you a flash drive and an external hard drive and suggests you might make a backup of company data to store at your home.Finally, Tom mentions that the current head of computers is Andrew Mayfair. Andrew is in poor health and currently lives in a cabin a few miles from Rugby TN. Andrew has continued to work from home; unfortunately, his Internet connection is extremely slow. However, he prefers to use the telephone. Tom also notes that Andrew is uncomfortable with the decision to upgrade the technological infrastructure as he prefers the old ways. Further, Andrew has resisted employee requests to update computer equipment; as a result, Hidalgo operates on a mixture of older failure-prone equipment and personally-owned devices.With that, Tom sends you back to Pats office to copy whatever data you feel might need to be backed up. After finishing, you are instructed to take the flash drive and external hard drive home with you for the weekend.SaturdayWhile enjoying a free Saturday afternoon, you receive a panicked call from Pat. She just heard from Clark, the company president. The Australian company Pat had arranged to distribute the new BBQ-related products has complained directly to Clark somehow theyve learned that the manufacturer has agreed to offer a discounted price to Hidalgo in exchange for large bulk purchases. As Pat explains, those bulk purchases do represent a significant investment for Hidalgo but will allow the company to sell to multiple vendors. However, Pats major concern is HOW the Australian company representative knows the discounted price. That information is supposed to be confidential. As Pat hangs up, you receive a call from Tom. Tom informs you that Andrews condition has worsened while he should recover, he will be taking an extended leave of absence. As a result, you are to report to Toms office first thing on Monday morning.MondayTom ushers you inside and notes that, next to Andrew, you have the most experience and expertise with information systems. Tom goes on acknowledge that your graduation ceremony for your undergraduate degree from UT Martin is scheduled for the coming weekend; he then extends his hand and congratulates you on your new promotion. Tom explains that you will be the acting computer person in Andrews absence. Next, Tom gives you your first assignment. Figure out how the Australian company learned about the discounted price. In addition, he notes that several computers have failed already this morning you are to address those issues first. He also suggests visiting with someone named Cindy, who apparently is in charge of spare parts for computers.In other words, your first task with Hidalgo Trading Company is to review the current operating procedures and to identify potential security issues.
