In November 2015 news reports disclosed that a cyberattack on VTech Holdings Ltd., a Hong Kong based digital toymaker for kids, had exposed the data on 6.4 million children. Experts called this the largest known hack on children and could be worth millions of dollars. The United States had the largest number of children involved; but Canada, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, and seven other countries were also affected. The data breach was a parent's nightmare, a wake-up call. Recommendations for different approaches to security were immediately presented. VTech disclosed that the hacked profiles of children included their name, gender, birth date, mailing address, email address, password retrieval questions, IP addresses, and passwords. The news of the hack attack came just before the Christmas season, and items like tablets and smartwatches from VTech and other similar companies were expected to be high on children wish lists. VTech's Kidizoom Smartwatch and InnoTab tablets were predicted to be two of their top sellers. The hackers learned information about customer data stored on VTech's Learning Lodge app store database where apps, games, ebooks, and other content can be downloaded. VTech notified all affected users and temporarily suspended the Learning Lodge website until everything could be investigated and steps taken to prevent another hack attack. When the hacker revealed himself, he said he attacked VTech because they had such poor security and he wanted to make them aware of that fact. He contacted a news reporter because if he went to the company he did not think they would believe him. He said he had accidentally stumbled into a thread in a forum of people dedicated to hacking. He also indicated that the forum of people enjoyed tinkering with sites and discussing how sites could be improved. As he got into VTech's website, he quickly obtained access to the administrative services on the server and recognized he could do almost anything he wished to do. He said he never intended to publish or profit from the data. He just wanted the company to be aware of issues and fix them
