Conflict arises due to differences and disagreements, and most of the time antagonist in the workplace is acting aggressively, not easy to control, and disrespecting boundaries. The antagonist in the workplace is those employees involve in making arguments that will lead to conflict. They are insecure in their role and hide their uncertainty by acting excessively aggressive and not easy to control. This can sometimes lead to significant loss of productivity and can directly affect the working environment. Below are some steps and actions in dealing with employees being antagonists towards each other.

  • Set a meeting with the employees and discuss their opinions or points of view without interruptions like reactions or comments. This is to clear out any disagreements between them. If someone is overly aggressive, the manager should intervene because that behavior is not acceptable.
  • Ask them for any suggestions on how they want to resolve the conflicts. What are ways they want to resolve the differences? As their manager, that is one way to assist or help them resolve their dispute. This is one way of weighing the situation and giving the proper resolution to the problem.
  • You can also ask each involved employee to identify what the other employee can do more or do less, stop doing, and start doing. Then all participants should discuss and execute the necessary changes to resolve the problem. Avoid treating each employee differently, and you should be fair and treat them with dignity and respect, so they behave the same.
  • Let the employees know that you will not choose sides. If they are unwilling to cooperate, you can take disciplinary action that can lead to dismissal.
  • Set a time to monitor their progress. Let them feel that their contributions are both critical in the organization, and you have faith and trust them that they can resolve their differences.

Question #1

You are a department manager in a large hospital. For the most part your department gets its work done and the majority of your employees are good producers who work well with each other. However, there are two exceptions. Two employees are so antagonistic toward each other that their behavior frequently becomes disruptive to all members of the department. They have become sufficiently troublesome that you have thought about firing or transferring them. You would prefer to get rid of both, even though when they are not at each others throats, they are acceptable producers. You know from experience that capable employees with their skills are difficult to locate in the immediate area.

The disruptive employees work in the same general area as the other dozen in the department. You have considered separating them but the departments tight layout leaves little room for change. Their job duties require them to interact with each other as well as with most of the other employees, so it is practically impossible for them to avoid each other. Their seemingly childish behavior features so prominently at times that the tension affects others in the group. There are some days when they will speak to each other only though a third party. You have no idea what is behind their antagonistic behavior. You know only that you must take some action for the sake of department stability and individual sanity.
