Read the text below, evaluate and ask positive question: How will you use what you've learned about social justice in your own professional practice or on behalf of your organization?

Through this course, I have really learned a lot about social justice. When it comes to applying what I have learned in my own life and professional life, I think there are a couple of different ways I could go about it. First, I think if you see something, say something. I am more of a nonconfrontational person, so when I used to see what I now know as a social justice issue, I would always assume that someone else would handle it. From learning about the different approaches in week 1, I now realize that it is up to each person to fight for social justice from the individual approach, so if you see something, say something. I think when it comes to my workplace, I can help be a voice as I am part of the gender disparity in the cybersecurity field. I believe that whenever new females join my team or other IT teams I work with, I can encourage them and help them with any issues they encounter.

  • What is your understanding of social justice and social inequities?

My understanding of social justice and social inequities is much broader and more specific. Social justice, to me now, is where any group of people or even individuals is facing a social inequity. Before starting this class, I honestly had no idea what when social inequities were; now, I believe I do have a solid understanding of them. Social inequities are where any group of people or individuals are facing stigmatization, marginalization, or oppression. Even though these three different perspectives on social inequities sound similar, they are different, and each has its own social justice issues. When you are being stigmatized, you are looked at with disapproval. When you are marginalized, you are thought of and made out as less than others. When people are oppressed, there is someone who thinks less of them and also believes they are better and have some power and control over them.

  • What is a question you still have about social justice?

One question that I still have about social justice is what approach seems to make the biggest impact on a social justice issue? We see groups and organizations fighting for social justice; we have music and literature fighting for social justice and just individuals fighting for social justice. Overall, throughout this course, I have learned a lot about social justice and social inequities and feel much more prepared to help pursue and fight for equality.
