Of all of the modern influential forces in today's society, the most polarizing and impactful one is politics. The political party a person identifies with, along with their core political values, often coincides with their personal values and sense or morality (Goren, 2005). In recent years, politics have become increasingly partisan and hostile (Park, 2020). If anything, this has caused people to become more passionate and engulfed in politics. So much so that it has shaped personal values and ideologies. While it is important to stay informed and involved in politics, it should not become the basis of one's morality. This affects Christians negatively, in my opinion. Hostility in American politics has gotten increasingly worse over the past few decades, and Christians have gotten caught in the middle, just like everyone else (Park, 2020). Politics have become so partisan that many Christians have lost sight of God, and have become entrenched in the political scene. Politics can become idolatrous if not kept in check, so this is something Christians should be aware of (Park, 2020). Christians should still be involved in politics, but they should keep the vitriol and arguments with the opposing side to a minimum. Christians should always use the Bible and God's will when making political decisions, whether its voting, running for office, or simply consuming the news. My advice regarding politics is to stay informed and active without getting overly involved. This is what the Bible instructs us to do on multiple occasions. For instance, Titus 3:9 says: "But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless" (ESV). Engaging in unneeded discourse about laws or politics is a waste of time, instead Christians should be focusing on God and how to best serve others. Acts 5:29 expresses a similar sentiment: "But Peter and the apostles answered, We must obey God rather than men" (ESV). Christians should not recklessly break laws or disobey political leaders, but God is the one we should be following, not politics. Unfortunately, many Christians lose sight of this, and allow modern politics to shape their values rather than Christ (Park, 2020).
