Engaging an audience can be difficult through an informative speech, because a lot of speakers make the mistake of assuming the audience will listen to them despite their delivery (Communication in the Real World).Audience's are more likely to pay attention to a speaker who they believe is credible, produces audience-centered and well researched information, and have good organization of the information they're presenting (Communication in the Real World).

One tactic I found helpful when preparing for my speech was thinking about the audience I was presenting to, and how they already viewed me as a person. I presented my speech at work, where we are all very close and know a lot about each other. There wasn't a big push for me to win my crowd over for this example, so I didn't do much of an introduction for them. Another tactic that helped me prepare was choosing which information was important enough to keep, and which information I could leave out. This helped me organize my slideshow better, and simplify the presentation for the audience. I also attempted to use humor to engage the audience. I threw in a couple of jokes about my cooking skills in order to keep the audience engaged. It also helped the dynamic of the presentation feel parallel to the topic, which was informal.
