Response to this discussion post Hello class! |
Hello class! | noticed in both his writing and in the videos provided that Oliver Sacks displays compassion for the characters or subjects he writes about. | really enjoyed reading in detail how he observed each of his subjects or characters' quirks. By doing this, he gives us a deeper insight on each person and does not just analyze their neurological disorders to the readers. | also enjoyed how his work can blend a clinical evaluation with a story. My favorite | would have to say was about Dr. P, the man who mistook his wife for a hat. It was very interesting to learn about the disorder called agnosia, but also intriguing to learn more about Dr. P could still read music and paint. Oliver Sacks' clinical viewpoint regarding his patients showed me that clinicians can see patients as a genuine puzzle to be solved. Oliver was consistently surprised about Dr. P's strange behavior and inability to identify objects but still be able to do complex things such as compose / play music. Oliver's viewpoint on his patients also made me think about healthcare and how it is likely many healthcare providers also see us as genuine puzzles to be solved and can marvel at our "absurdities" and our natural abilities to still do things well despite having an illness or medical condition
