rofessionals: Assignment #1 Worksheet
Directions. Use the following worksheet to develop and outline your ideas for this assignment. Once you complete the exercise, you can write up the final brief for your assignment.
Selecting The Focus. I would encourage you to choose a form of discrimination you have experienced, witnessed, or know someone who has experienced this form of discrimination. Selecting the s focus is important, as it will enable you to come up with ideas (see Parts 2 and 3) and provide you with a perspective (see Part 4).
Target Audience. You are writing a brief that will be shared with the Senior HR Leaders in a company. Therefore, your goal is to be brief and concise, provide examples, and add value by sharing recommended HR actions/solutions.
Formatting. Use headers and bullet points throughout the brief to help the audience follow your thoughts. Examples of headers might include (Overview, Employee Outcomes, HR Actions). Additionally, write in bullet points especially related to Employee Outcomes and HR Actions. An example is included at the end of this worksheet to help you structure the formatting for this assignment.
Part 1 Overview. [This is the second shortest section of the brief. Be concise and brief in this section. Do not exceed 6 sentences.]
Provide a brief definition of the specific workplace discrimination from ONE of the following in this list:
As defined by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the types of discrimination in workplaces include Age, Disability, Equal Pay/Compensation, Genetic Information, Harassment, National Origin, Pregnancy, Race/Color, Religion, Retaliation, Sex, Sexual Harassment or Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity.
Part 2 &3 Employee Outcomes & HR Actions. [This is the longest part of your brief.] Here, I am looking for specific examples of (a) how employees could be impacted, (b) how that impact might present/manifest/show up in the workplace, and (c) relevant and specific HR actions. Use the table below to organize your ideas. This section of the assignment is the longest. It requires details, original ideas, and relevant HR actions. When you use this table, work across the rows, 1 x 1. See the table on the next page.
Part 4 Your perspective. [This section of the brief should not exceed 4 sentences].
Write a conclusion summarizing what happens in the workplace if HR does not address the discrimination discussed in the research brief. The conclusion should reflect YOUR critical thinking skills and perspective. References should be used minimally for this portion of the assignment.
Adding value to the assignment: If you have personal experiences you can share in this section of the research brief, they are welcomed and encouraged. Specifically, if you have witnessed or experienced the discrimination discussed in Part One, you can add value by sharing specific examples here.
Employee Outcome Description
This section should describe three outcomes that may occur if/when the employee experiences the discrimination discussed in Part 1. For example, if the employee experiences religious discrimination, how might it affect the employee?
Use one line for each outcome description (e.g., Less productivity, higher turnover, lower job satisfaction, fewer promotion opportunities, lower mental well-being, less trust in management, high blood pressure, increased stress, feelings of isolation)
Employee Outcome Manifestation (i.e., Examples)
This section describes how the employee outcome might manifest itself at work. Hint: I am looking for your original ideas here.
HR Actions/Solutions I want to understand the action(s) that HR can take to support/resolve the employee outcome discussed in the Employee Outcome Description column. You can use research to help generate ideas.
Finally, discuss WHY the action will help support employees who have been discriminated against. You need to incorporate your ideas here.
Ex.
Outcome #1. When an employee experiences religious discrimination at the workplace, it may hinder their promotion opportunities. For example, a company could refuse to promote an employee they see completing daily prayers because they think it prevents the employee from working efficiently. Once the employee perceives their promotion opportunities are limited, they might become disengaged. For example,
The employees might be less likely to take on additional work. For example, if a coworker calls in sick, a disengaged employee is less likely to work to complete additional work to help the team cover the employee who called out sick.
To support fair promotion practices, HR can:
[Action] HR can create a promotion policy that recognizes hardworking employees by justifying promotion decisions through objective evidence. A promotion policy template helps management devise qualifications effectively.
Source. Promotion policy guidelines and best practices
[Rationale Why do you believe the action will be useful?] There are many advantages of HR coming up with promotion policies. For example, the criteria that are used to determine employee eligibility for a promotion will be consistent across all employees. Also, [incorporate your own ideas]....
