In program 6 we will write a program that estimates the cost of a new shingled roof on a simple house with a simple roof structure. We calculate the area of house as length times width. But since the roof is a little larger than the house area, we need to factor in what is called thepitch of the roof. Theroof pitchis a measure of the angle that the roof makes with the horizontal. It is a measure of roof steepness. The steeper the roof, the more the roof area is larger than the house area.

Pitch: The roof's pitch is indicated as a rise/run as shown the image below.pitch = rise/run. This is not a calculation, just a way of expressing roof steepness. In fact it is really a proportion, always based on a run of 12 inches. So a roof with a pitch of 4/12 rises 4 inches for every 12 on the horizontal. As you can see from the image below, the larger the rise, the steeper the roof angle. Also, note that some roofs have an overhang at the eaves which may or may not figure into the calculation.
