Sampling allows a researcher to select a subgroup of the population being studied to generalize the properties
Question:
Sampling allows a researcher to select a subgroup of the population being studied to generalize the properties of the larger group and make projections about that population based on the sample (Frankfort-Nachmias & Leon-Guerrero, 2021). Samples should be selected in a way that matches the possible properties of the group and ensures the sample is like the larger group; when the sample represents the group, the study results have a high degree of generalizability (Salkind & Frey, 2019). Multiple types of sampling exist, probability sampling, simple random sampling, systematic random sampling, stratified random sampling, and understanding the significance of the sampling distribution (Frankfort-Nachmias & Leon-Guerrero, 2021).
Based on the size of this student's research population related to age, occupational status, and health insurance, one appropriate sample type would be simple random sampling. This type of sampling will ensure that all population members will have an equal opportunity to be included in the study (Frankfort-Nachmias & Leon-Guerrero, 2021). Another type of appropriate sampling for this mock study is systematic random sampling; this would allow the selection of the population based on the desired size of the sample and gives all members the chance to be included in the study (Frankfort-Nachmias & Leon-Guerrero, 2021).
The sample size is important because a sample size that is too small will not be representative of the population; however, a larger sample size has a likelihood of being representative of the study population (Frankfort-Nachmias & Leon-Guerrero, 2021).
In my professional experience, the finance team uses simple random sampling to validate journal entries and ensure we have the appropriate accruals in the general ledger. We use systematic random sampling to audit the team's work and ensure we have reliable numbers when reporting.
