Self Study Case: Employee Redundancy, or Which one should be fired Suppose, you are the Marketing Manager of an ING office in Amsterdam. ING is a major Dutch bank that needs to cut down costs, due to a change in policy. Because clients use more and more digital services, ING wants to invest 800,000 Euros in ICT. Hence, ING's MT decided to fire 2,700 employees in the Netherlands. Your office has to let go 10% of its employees and you have been ordered to dismiss one employee of the total of four (excluding you) full time employees in the Marketing Department before 1 July 2021. Two have a one year contract, the other two have a fixed contract. ING also has a diversity policy regarding HRM, meaning that by 2021 40% of all employees should be female and 30% should stem from Dutch people with a migration background. Managers who achieve these goals are entitled to a bonus of 15% of their annual salary. Your Chief Manager is dedicated to this diversity policy and so are you. Who do you decide to fire? 1. Johan, 62: has been working with your office for 29 years, always dutiful and meticulous. Almost never ill, never late, never complaining. Has a lot of experience but not so much with social media. Strong record of successful ideas about advertisements. As a senior employee you can offer him a specific arrangement, but that will cost him approximately 15% of his final pension per year for the rest of his life. Johan is to be retired as from 1 February 2023. Johan earns a gross salary of 54,000 a year. 2. Wilma, 42: with the firm for almost 12 years. She has a Master in Communication. Mother of three children aged 6-10, became a widow two years ago. Wilma had to take a three months leave due to her loss and suffered from a bad flue twice in the past year. Her work is excellent though. Wilma earns a gross salary of 51,000 per year. 3. Annie, 31: on her first contract which will end 1 January 2021. Very promising employee, has a Bachelor in International Business and Languages and a Master in Business Administration. Talented, motivated, working hard. Has done various jobs in different business fields since her graduation five years ago, which contributes to her broad view on marketing and wide experience in the field. Is eager to grow into a higher management position in due time. Annie is happily married and four months pregnant with her first child. Annie earns a gross salary of C 43,000 per year. 4. Karim, 23: is on his second yearly contract and doing very well. Karim is of Dutch Moroccan origin, born and raised in Amsterdam. He has a bachelor in Marketing, is a hard working guy who is always seeking to develop his skills and knowledge. Karim has excellent language skills in Dutch and English and a feeling for effective social media posts. Karim could be offered a third yearly contract per 1 August 2020 but afterwards ING should either let him go or offer him a fixed contract. Karim's annual gross salary is 38,000 Your manager wants to know your decision right after the weekend, on Monday morning 9.00 am.
