Assume the role of shipping supervisor at Apex Company. One of your employees, Jason, has been an excellent performer for the past five years. However, during the past two weeks, Jason has not seemed himself. He operated a forklift when a careless accident caused about $2,000 in damages. Moreover, Jason punched in late twice. When you discussed these incidents, he apologized, attributing his tardiness to car trouble. Normally outgoing and energetic, he appears tried and edgy. Usually one of the liveliest contributors at meetings of the group, he said nothing at yesterday's safety meeting. During afternoon break on the loading dock today, Spud, another employee, made a joking comment about Jason's favorite college football team, that had been beaten handily by its cross-state rival this past weekend. Jason responded angrily with an expletive, then got up and left the area. Another employee commented, ''What's been eating Jason, anyway?'' Everyone shrugged their shoulders. You decide to have a coaching meeting with Jason.

It is about two hours later. Jason just walked into your office. You stand, acknowledge him, and close the door behind him. Jason takes a seat, and as you move to sit down, he says, ''So you wanted to see me about something.''
