Question:
Social Problem Analysis Proposal
Topic: Teenage Cyberbullying
1. Explain in paragraph form why Teenage Cyberbullying is a social problem and not an individual problem. Explain why this topic is a social justice issue.
2. Outline and explain how you will use the Triangle Model (Individuals and Communities, Dominant Ideologies, and Social Institution) to analyze your topic.
a. Individuals and Communities (ex. biases, stereotypes, etc.)
b. Dominant Ideologies (ex. racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, etc.)
c. Social Institutions (ex. school, ministry of education, social media, legal system/government, family, etc.)
3. Annotated Bibliography: Provide one source, with a one-paragraph description of the source.
Your descriptions of the sources should indicate the content of the source, why you chose it, and any biases or limitations you can detect.
Tips:
• Tasks: You are being asked to do 3 things. You will identify a social problem for your topic, then outline your plan using the Triangle Model and some preliminary research. The annotation of your sources in the bibliography demonstrates why you chose that source, and that you understand both the strengths of the source and its limitations.
• Content: Keep your topic narrowly focused. Example: a topic like "treatment of indigenous people in Canada" is too broad to analyze effectively. A better choice would be "anti-indigenous racism in Canadian healthcare". When describing your social problem and sources, you should use the concepts and terminology from the social analysis lessons and the OER textbook
• Considerations: Your topic is a social problem, not an individual problem. It should also be a social justice issue, so a topic like the high price of home ownership would not be appropriate, as it only pertains to a privileged population, to begin with. If your topic considered issues around access to affordable rental accommodation, it would capture the social justice dimension, as that is a problem that could impact everyone, not just the privileged. You can also choose a social problem topic that is relevant to your groups' interests or future careers, and include an explanation of that in the opening paragraph, if you wish.
