Solving Activity: Shape and Count Challenge Standard: "NY-K.CC.3 Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral 0-20 (with 0 representing a count of no objects)" (NYSED Kindergarten Draft, n.d.). Standards-based Objective: Students will write numbers from 0 to 20 and represent quantities using different shapes in a problem-solving context. Pre-assessment: Students will be provided with a set of simple pictures depicting various quantities of shapes (for example, circles, rectangles, and triangles) and they will be asked to identify and name the corresponding quantity before beginning the "Shape and Count Challenge" activity. This could be done by presenting students with a set of pictures depicting various quantities of shapes (for example, circles, rectangles, and triangles). Using this evaluation, the teacher is better able to identify each student's baseline level of comprehension about the representation of number and form. After completing the Pre-assessment above with three kindergarten students, one was able to identify and name all the corresponding quantities correctly, the second one struggled with identifying and name the corresponding quantities above 6 correctly and the third student was only able to identify and name one corresponding quantity correctly (which was 5 circles).
