A series of recalls were initiated, totalling to 30 million cars worldwide. GM was initially fined 35 million for the delay in reporting the problem. Litigation by victims led GM setting aside 625 million in victim compensation. By 2016, GM had paid 6 billion in fines, lawsuit settlements and recall costs with additional litigations costs mounting.
