Step 1

Draw a line segment on your paper using a straightedge. Label the endpoints A and B.

Step 2

Draw a point on the line segment between A and B, and label that point P.

Step 3

Place the compass point on P, then set the width of the compass so that the distance is relatively small. Then draw an arc that intersects ABtwice. Label the intersections T and V.

Step 4

Enlarge the compass setting and place the point of the compass at point T and draw an arc that passes through ABand is above and below point T.

Step 5

Keep the compass setting and place the point of the compass at point V. Draw an arc that passes through ABand intersects the arc drawn in the previous step twice. This should construct two points. Label these points X and Y.

Step 6

Using a straightedge, draw a line segment through the points X and Y. This line segment, XY, should be perpendicular to ABand go through point P.

Step 7

Check your work by using a protractor to verify that mXPA=90and mXPB=90.
