Step 1: Port Mirroring, Hubbing out, Using a Tap.
Step 2:
Port Mirroring: In order to use this technique, a network switch must be configured to send a copy of all network packets visible on one switch portor the whole VLANto a network monitoring link on a different switch port. Usually, network appliances that need to monitor traffic on the network without affecting its operation are employed for this.
Hubbing out: In this technique, the analyzer system and the target device are connected to the same network segment via a network hub. The analyzer can record all traffic to and from the target device because hubs broadcast all incoming traffic to all ports. Although this method is simple, it may be constrained by hub availability and the resulting network speed limitations.
Using a Tap: A hardware device placed at a specific network point to monitor particular traffic is called a network tap, or test access point. In settings where software-based packet capture is impractical, data can be captured using taps. Their function is to record traffic, including full-duplex traffic, in a precise and dependable manner without creating a single point of failure or adversely affecting network performance.
Step 3:
Port Mirroring: Replicating traffic from one or more source ports (or VLANs) to a specified destination port, where the analyzer is connected, is how traffic is collected on a switch.
Hubbing Out: The target device and the packet analyzer are physically connected to a hub, which broadcasts all traffic to all associated ports, in order to capture traffic.
Using a Tap: Traffic is captured by physically inserting a tap device between two network devices. The tap copies the traffic to a monitoring port where the packet analyzer is connected.
Step 4: For each of the ways (you mentioned in (step 3) used to capture traffic, develop a well
labeled flowchart of the steps that are performed. An example of a flowchart is on page 35 of the
textbook which is the screenshot i attchached. (12 points)
