My research essay will investigate the interesting and sometimes misconceived history of food waste in America, from the early 20th century to today. I'm interested in this subject because I want to know how our opinions about food have evolved over the years, especially with regard to how much we discard. I'm particularly intrigued by seeing the cultural and economic changes that have resulted in our contemporary "throwaway" society, including the advent of supermarkets, altered portion sizes, and the ubiquitous availability of food throughout the year. I'd like to discover more about the

environmental consequences of food waste and to discover particular periods or policies that worsened the issue or assisted in alleviating it. Finally, I wish to know how patterns of food waste in the past can help us make our food system more sustainable and equitable today.

My research paper will discuss the emergence of food nationalism and its effects on international trade and local food systems. I've selected this subject matter because I'm fascinated by the political aspects of food and how countries utilize food production and supply as an economic and identity tool. I'm curious about how the need for "food sovereignty" among a nation affects its farm policies, trade relationships, and population health. I would like to find out how events in the past, like wars or financial crises, have led to an increased focus on local food production and how these developments influence consumer behavior and farmers' livelihoods. In the end, I want to reveal the intricate relationship between national identity and what we consume.
