Task $1$: Sketch a Design for the Home Network System

$1.$ Media Server

o Function: Stores and streams media files $($movies$,$ music, etc.$)$ to devices

connected to the home network.

o Software: Install Plex, Jellyfin, or any other media server solution.

o Storage: Connect this server to a NAS or local storage for efficient streaming.

$2.$ Wireless Client Authentication Server

o Function: This server authenticates all wireless devices on the home network

before granting them access.

o Software: Consider using FreeRADIUS or OpenWrt for managing wireless

client authentication.

o Security: Use WPA$2-$Enterprise for client connections to provide secure

access.

$3.$ Virtual Machine $($VM$)$ with Internet Access

o Function: A VM $($without a physical keyboard or mouse$)$ that is managed

remotely and connected to the internet.

o Software: Install an OS on the VM $($Linux recommended$)$ and configure

remote access tools like SSH or VNC for managing it$.$

Home Network Design

$$ Router: Central connection point for all network devices.

$$ Media Server: Connected to the router via Ethernet.

$$ Wireless Client Authentication Server: Provides wireless access, connected to the

router via Ethernet and authenticates clients.

$$ Virtual Machine: Hosted on a physical server $($either within the authentication server

or on a separate device$),$ connected to the router for internet access.

Network Topology Sketch

Consider drawing a topology like the following:

$$ A router connected to the ISP$/$modem$.$

$$ A media server and wireless client authentication server connected to the router

via Ethernet.

$$ Wireless clients connecting to the network through the wireless authentication

server.

$$ A virtual machine $($hosted on the authentication server or another server$),$ with

remote management enabled $($VNC$,$ SSH$,$ etc.$).$

Task $2$: Creating Subnets

Now that the network design is in place, we will segment the network using subnets for

better traffic management and security.

$1.$ Subnet $1$: Media Server Subnet

o Purpose: Isolate the media server to prevent unnecessary traffic from

affecting its performance.

o CIDR Block: $192\mathrm{.}168\mathrm{.}10\mathrm{.}0/24(255\mathrm{.}255\mathrm{.}255\mathrm{.}0)$

o Devices: The media server and any media devices $($Smart TVs$,$ gaming

consoles, etc.$)$ will connect here.

$2.$ Subnet $2$: Wireless Client Subnet

o Purpose: All wireless devices $($laptops$,$ phones, IoT devices$)$ will be placed in

this subnet.

o CIDR Block: $192\mathrm{.}168\mathrm{.}20\mathrm{.}0/24(255\mathrm{.}255\mathrm{.}255\mathrm{.}0)$

o Devices: Wireless clients $($authenticated via the wireless authentication

server$).$

$3.$ Subnet $3$: Virtual Machine Subnet

o Purpose: The VM will be placed in a separate subnet to allow controlled

internet access.

o CIDR Block: $192\mathrm{.}168\mathrm{.}30\mathrm{.}0/24(255\mathrm{.}255\mathrm{.}255\mathrm{.}0)$

o Devices: Only the VM will exist on this subnet.
