Task: When you begin to look for a job, do your research on the companies you are interested in. To prepare for writing a resume and cover letter, you must know what your skills are, so you can tailor your skills to the ad. This assignment is designed to help you begin your job search using these principles.
Directions:
This assignment has THREE (3) parts. Please include all three parts in ONE memo document:
-
A job advertisement for a position you think you will qualify for once you graduate (copy and paste the ad or take a screenshot and paste). You will need the ad to attach it to your resume and cover letter as well, so make sure you have a copy because they disappear sometimes.
-
A chart or side-by-side lists of your hard skills and soft skills (at least five each!)
-
A one-page description of the company you are interested in working for including the following information:
-
Introduction: Write an introduction with a brief overview of the company. Give me the name and location(s) of the company, institute, or non-profit organization.
-
Body: Write about the companys background, mission statement, type of customers served, etc. What are the companys values and community contributions. How big is the company and what do they do? What special achievements has the company made? See what else you can find out. How do employees there rate the company in terms of the workplace and job satisfaction?
-
Conclusion: Write a conclusion that sums up your impression of the company and whether or not you feel it would be a good fit for you as an employer.
-
Document your sources using APA style in-text citations and a References page.
-
It is important to research companies you are considering working for prior to applying to that company, and certainly before you interview. This memo should reflect the research you have done into the company youre interested in after you find an ad.
You will then use this company and job ad as the basis for your resum, cover letter, and interview assignments, so be sure to choose something that works for your skills set now or just immediately after you graduate. Avoid job ads for positions that require many more years of experience than you will have upon graduating. This assignment gives you an opportunity to dig into what is available for your interests and skills.
Format: Memo, one page, single spaced, appropriate typeface, 12 pt font. Feel free to use a memo template, but adapt it if needed to account for all necessary guide words, etc. Please refer to your textbook for memo format review if needed.
