TELUS has had the same CEO since the year 2000: Darren Entwistle. This makes Entwistle the longest-serving CEO in the global telecommunications industry. He took the company from a small telephone provider serving Western Canada to a global communications and information technology leader (TELUS, n.d.). Their stock generated total shareholder return of 286 per cent since Entwistle became CEO in 2000. Entwistle was called the best CEO in the sector by Dvai Ghose, managing director/head of research at Canaccord Genuity. He is considered to have a competitive nature and is also considered brilliant for having transformed TELUS into a national player (Lewis, 2014). Entwistle believes that TELUS greatest asset is the more than 142, 000 team members and retirees around the globe. Under his leadership, the company has been ranked number one in the world in respect of team engagement. TELUS was named one of Canadas Top 10 Most Admired Corporate Cultures by Watersone Human Capital for three consecutive years. Has also been recognized as Worlds Best Employers 2021 by Forbs, tanking first in Canada and 40th globally. In 2010 TELUS became the first Canadian company to be named the Most Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation globally by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (TELUS, n.d.). To name a very small few of the many awards the company has received over the years.
There was only one year where he was not the CEO. In 2014, Entwistle was set to move to a chairman position within in company, it is said that a few months prior he had chosen his successor Joe Natale and started mentoring him (Lewis, 2014).
Joe Natale had joined TELUS in 2003 as an executive vice-president (Lewis, 2014). He went onto become TELUS chief commercial officer from 2010 until 2014 with his biggest focus being building customer loyalty and retention. In 2014 Joe Natale replaced Entwistle (Lewis, 2014).
Natale continued focusing on customer retention throughout his year as CEO so much so that in his last quarter as CEO TELUS added 15,000 wireless subscribers more than Bell putting them in number one in the country (Henderson, 2015).
In 2015, only one year after Natale took the helm at Telus it was announced that he was resigning due to the fact that he could not move to Vancouver from Toronto due to family matters (Henderson, 2015). After TELUS, Joe Natale went on to being the CEO of Rogers from 2014 to 2021. He found out that Edward Rogers the son of the company founder Ted Rogers was plotting against him to get him fired (CBC News, 2021).
Below there is a chart comparison of leadership traits they may or may not share. Although, Natale was at the helm for a very small period of time it is enough to showcase even more how great Darren Entwistle is as a leader.
