Question: The fourth case study we will be discussing is Case 5 . 1 : Yahoo in China, that is , pgs . 2 2 8

The fourth case study we will be discussing is Case 5.1: "Yahoo in China," that is, pgs.228-229 of MIB. This case study deals with issues that arise between multinational corporations and authoritarian law, as well as corporate complicity in the repression of personal freedoms. Though the study becomes open-ended, it is primarily about the complicity of Yahoo in the Chinese government's imprisonment of an activist for democracy. One of the issues that arises here is whether or not it is acceptable for companies to work with authoritarian regimes, like the Chinese government, in order to make change "from the inside" and provide the citizens with a valuable service or whether it is better to refuse to cooperate with, or do business within, a nation that restricts democratic values and personal liberties. The following are a few questions from the case study presented by Barry and Shaw. They are meant to spur discussion:
"In your view, was Yahoo right or wrong to assist Chinese authorities? What would you have done if you were in charge of Yahoo?"
