The text (p. 145) lists 4 things to do in a new job:

1. Understand your probationary period. 2. Keep a log of your accomplishments and activities in preparation for your annual review. 3. Find a mentor. (I opened a discussion of this one in another post - if you want to address it, please post under that.) 4. Find out about your career path and how it can be achieved.

Other than finding a mentor (which has been covered elsewhere), how valuable is this advice? Is there anything that should be added? Have you ever seen someone crash and burn for failing to follow the advice above? Explain.
