This assignment is important because as managers you will be responsible for projects and you will either be assigned to on a project as a team member, or you will assign people to the project. Not all teams function at an optimal level. You may have to intervene and restructure the team, you may have to re-design the project, or you may need to close the project. It is important to be able to recognize warning signs and to take the initiative to redirect the efforts of the team.
This assignment asks you to evaluate YOUR team experience this semester. To look in depth at what worked and what did not work. To evaluate what you would do differently, or what you would do the same. This reflection is important so you can learn from mistakes and so you do not dismiss an action that led to successful team performance. This is an individual assignment. It is your personal evaluation of your team experience and the identification of lessons-learned you will take with you to help you be a better team member or as a manager to identify red flags so they may be addressed early in the project.
You will need to cite three sources and include a reference page. Your paper should not be more than six (6) double spaced pages (this does not include the reference page). The paper should include the following sections:
- Introduction: introduce the major points you will make in the body of your paper and the practical implications.
- Discussion: provide an analysis of the following topics.
- Project goals and team vision: what was your team vision and project goals, how did you come to a consensus for the vision/goals, did all team members share the team vision and goals, etc. The punctuated equilibrium exercise will help with this. Did you revise your project time-line?
- Team development: how did you use each persons strengths on your team to assign roles, how did your team move through forming, storming norming, performing, and adjourning. Did your team experience punctuated equilibrium, if so how did your team handle any issues you may have identified.
- Collaboration: explain how your team did or did not contribute to the greater sum of the parts, were people in the right roles, what did you do if collaboration did not occur. How would you ensure a collaborative team in the future?
- Conflict: how did your team handle conflict. How did each persons strengths contribute to either the escalation of or resolution of team conflicts/disagreements. What did you learn about yourself after taking the mind tools assessment. Did you make any personal changes that benefited the group? Did you notice satisficing or escalation of commitment?
- Lessons learned: Explain what you would do differently and what would you do the sam What worked well and how would you implement this into your next team project. What red flags would you look for to help you recognize that a problem existed so you could address it while it was small, etc.
- Conclusion: Tie all parts of the paper together and explain the most important lesson learned in this project. What will you take with you for your next team project.
