This assignment requires you to write two messages; one is a negative response message and the other is a persuasive message. Read these instructions very carefully:

-----------------

The following email message is an inquiry from a former student. The answer to his inquiry has to be no. I'm not in the market for any insurance products, which I know Northwestern Mutual sells. I want the student to clearly understand that I'd rather not receive another solicitation for insurance products.

On the other hand, I don't want to discourage the him, and in fact I want to encourage him to do the best work he can for his company. Like most teachers, I want my former students to succeed, and to value the education they've experienced with the University and my courses. When they do, they help build my reputation and the reputation of the University.

While I'm somewhat perplexed about the mechanical errors in the message, I recognize that I'm not in a position to admonish my former student, because I'm no longer his teacher.

First, acting as if you were the receiver of this message, write a response that firmly declines the request, but still encourages the former student, and builds good will at every possible opportunity. Although the subject line of the student's message is questionable, to be audience-oriented you shouldn't change it: an email response automatically adds "Re:" to it to help it's receiver recognize that it is a response to his message.

Then, after you've completed your response message, re-write the student's message to me in a way that has a better chance of being persuasive. In this case, for starters, the new message's subject line could be far better.

When you've completed the work, save the file(s) using a course-approved file type and file name, and submit it to the CW drop box by the end of the assignment day.

Professor Holmes,

I wanted to take a second to thank you for the great semester I had in your class. In addition, I recently began an internship at Northwester Mutual this summer. I'm not sure if you are in the market for anything I do, but I do know that you're from around the area. With this being said, one of my main objectives is to expand my network throughout the greater Dayton area.

I was wondering if you would be able to take an hour or so one day in early June to sit down, have lunch, and help me expand my network. If so, please call me (XXX) XXX-XXXX, or simply reply to this email and give me a number to reach you at.

Thank you for your consideration and again, for the great semester of class.
