This experiential exercise consists of a thought experiment that asks you to think how you would respond if placed in the following situation. You and your spouse are high school graduates and have both been working for Walmart as full$-$time hourly employees in the same store for three years in a small city. You have been pleasantly surprised by Walmart$$s new employment policy that has raised your pay from $$9$ per hour to $$11$ per hour and extended paid parental leave to all full$-$time workers, where previously this benefit was only offered to high$-$level management. Being in your early $20$s$,$ you and your spouse would like to start a family within the next few years. Unexpectedly a major retail competitor of Walmart has recruited you for a higher$-$paying job doing similar work at a store in your city, and this company is offering you higher pay at $$15$ per hour but without the benefit of paid parental leave. What will you do$?$ Will you take the job offer at the competing company with higher pay? Or will you choose to remain at Walmart, which now has a paid parental leave benefit? Be prepared to explain the basis of your decision to quit or remain at Walmart with other members of the class when the instructor calls on you.
