This is such an interesting question, because I have only one frame of reference. Since my first steps as a brand new leader, I have always managed remote teams. I know what you're thinking...COVID, but nope. I've been in leadership for over a decade and don't know any other way than deploy these skills in a virtual environment across a variety of tools. What I've found in practice that helps create some of the positive outcomes I strive for with my team is to mix up communication. All too often, we get complacent and end up resorting to the same tools over and over, which can be dull and monotonous. Whether it's Slack or Teams for text communication, quick phone calls, or Zoom meetings, I try to mix it up so the engagement is fresh each time and not a carry-over from the last time we interfaced. It's important to note that I do that when I initiate conversation/contact, but as a leader it's far more important that you remain accessible via the medium your team-member prefers/needs to use though.
