Company A is a supplier of frozen foods that provides frozen hamburger patties and chicken nuggets to Companies B and C. In order to increase Company A's profits, the company's leaders intend to use expired meat as raw materials. He believes that it is safe to consume expired meat after high-temperature frying. Ben, the supply manager, was initially opposed to the idea because it is a major issue that will harm the company's reputation. However, the company's leader persuaded Ben that purchasing expired meat would help the company save money and that he would be terminated if the company continued to struggle financially. Ben was not persuaded because he believes that doing so is extremely risky. Ben was threatened by company leaders with termination if he did not comply with their instructions. Ben, who had worked for the company for over a decade, was afraid of losing his job because it had taken him years to attain the manager position, so he chose to do as he was instructed.

Ben was instructed on where to obtain the expired meat and tasked with finding a reliable employee to assist him. Ben went to the HR department and inquired whether the company could save money and alleviate its financial woes by selling expired meat at regular prices. The HR manager responded affirmatively, but it is unethical to do so. Therefore, Ben continued to request that HR locate a trustworthy employee to assist him. The employee knew it was unethical to purchase expired meat, but he did so anyway and kept it a secret out of fear of losing his job.

Ben and the employee sent 20 tons of expired meat to the thawing room for raw chicken nugget ingredients, and then sent it to company B and company C. After the incident became public, company B and company C's business contracts with company A were terminated. In addition, both company B and company C lost customers during the third quarter of the year, and their sales fell by more than 50 percent.
