(The Jazz Age Explored Music has been a significant influence in American culture for a long time and continuously impacts our everyday lives whether we recognize it or not. Jazz was one of the most influential genres of music and flourished during the early 19th century bringing about a new age of musical expression. Initially jazz music was somewhat misunderstood due to its emergence aligning to the timing of the civil rights movement. Many people during this time viewed jazz as a vulgar genre, fit only for the lower class. In actuality jazz music represented a powerful statement about freedom, creativity, and American identity. Many jazz musicians used their lyrics to bring light to the sadness and frustration faced by the African-American community. Others focused on the impoverished people dealing with many struggles. In a way jazz gave all Americans an opportunity to come together despite racial, economic, and political differences.)

Please answer the following questions:

1. Write a thesis statement. Be as specific as possible about what your argument will be. In other words, dont just tell me you are writing about "vicious dog breeds." Instead, construct a specific, effective thesis statement, such as: "Dogs involved in attacks should not be euthanized" or "The media is responsible for the negative image of pit bulls."

2. Explain why you care. You should explain why you have a vested interest in this topic. Describe what specific personal experiences have led you to want to write about this.

3. What you know and what you don't. Discuss what you already know about this topic and what you want to learn more about.

4. Describe your target audience. Consider their demographic information (age, gender, race, religion, politics, etc.). Remember that you will be trying to persuade your readers to think or do something, and not all of your readers agree with you, so you need to determine how to thoughtfully and rhetorically persuade those readers to try to make them see it your way.

You must list a specific audience and cannot just claim to be writing for "everyone." Then, being as specific as possible, explain how will you adapt your writing to best persuade this specific audience?

5. Compose your own S/C Checklist. Remember, you cannot have an S/C Checklist without a thesis statement, so that should be clearly listed/labeled as well. Take your time with this, as it will become a functional tool for your work this semester. Try to have at least 4 items on each side of the checklist (but of course you can have more). And just like in the you looked at earlier in this week's learning module, use complete sentences.
