Socialization is a process by which new hires learn the expected values, norms and required behaviors which permit him to participate as a member of the organization. Ethical leader role is to ensure that ethical practices are carried out throughout the organization and use their influence to shape and empower the new hire/employees to achieve the organization goals. It is important that the socialization process begins at the initial interviewing stage, at which time the leader can be open and transparent to new hires in order to avoid misplaced expectations. Daniel Feldman, three-phase model of organizational socialization outlines this process:
- Anticipatory socialization phase: Occurs before an individual joins an organization, and involves the information people learn about different careers, occupations, professions, and organizations.
- Encounter phase: Employees learn what the organization is really like and reconcile unmet expectations.
- Change and acquisition phase: Requires employees to master tasks and roles and to adjust to work group values and norms (Kreitner, R & Kinicki, A. 2013).
It is the responsibility of the organization to help shape the new hires values, perceptions and behaviors to conform to the organization culture and this can start with the leader who is responsible to demonstrate the beliefs of the organization and reinforce behaviors that reflect the values of the organization. Some examples are:
- Set clear and transparent goals. Setting transparent goals at the company, team, and individual levels encourages hard work by giving everyone something to rally behind and measurable steps to celebrate along the way.
- Embedding Organizational Culture through Mentoring: mentoring contributes to creating a sense of oneness by promoting the acceptance of the organizations core values throughout the organization. Second, the socialization aspect of mentoring also promotes a sense of membership (Kreitner, R & Kinicki, A. 2013).
Setting clear goals and mentoring can make a new hire feel cared about and that they are important. By the organization showing these responsibilities and efforts this will help to shape the new hires values, perceptions and behaviors to conform to the organization culture (Kreitner, R & Kinicki, A. 2013).
I feel socialization with the influence of the leader, has a positive impact on the both the individual and the organization, the individual will form strong relationships with other employees and help build a successful workforce. Collaboration will develop because employees will have a strong relationship with each other, which will help the organization to continue to grow and prosper. Socialization fosters an environment that supports and shapes values, perceptions, behaviors, mutual respect, trust and belonging within the organization (Company Culture, 2018).
