  • Today most students do not work in accounting while they are in school. They may have an internship for a short time, but most students either do not work or they work in some other capacity, not as accountants, while in school. Are we doing accounting education the right way? Would it be better to move accounting education into an apprentice format, much like learning to be an electrician or other skilled trade, and not in a pure academic setting like learning to be a philosophy Professor?
  • Accounting rules have gotten very detailed, specific and complicated. In so doing, do they actually have less of an impact on society as a whole than if they remained less specific and detailed? Have we so limited the reach of accounting that Franklin would no longer say that he could use it as an organizing principle or that accounting was central to the order of life? Does anyone use accounting that broadly now, or is it seen only as a morass of specific and complicated rules?
