Question:
Toxic leadership works against diversity and inclusion practices. As she noted toxic leadership can engage in a wide range of behaviours, some of which are illegal or harmful. If leaders are practicing unethical behaviors they will most definitely not provide opportunities for employees to speak up, provide feedback and provoke change.
Different ways to motivate others to be more inclusive in the workplace could be asking questions, seeking feedback, understanding your employee population, and providing them learn and grow in their roles. From my experience when I am asked to speak on the work I do with different types of audiences at my job it makes me feel like my organization cares about my input and keeps me motivated.
I feel that it is more important to improve autonomy, mastery, and meaning when it comes to fostering an inclusive workplace. What I find is that if I am asked to develop a process or handle a project it means more to me than if I am following my leader's direction. Instead of following directions if employees are asked to take the lead with full support from their leadership it helps them to grow and master different skills they may not otherwise have the opportunity to. I believe this makes employees feel more inclusive and valuable to the organization.
The Rocket Model provides a good framework to diminish the potential for toxic leadership in a few ways. Identifying what success looks like to each team member is a good start as it can be different for each member. Aligning and developing team members with what they feel most passionate about is key and will help the team committed the success of the overall goal.
