Two large vessels are connected by a circular duct which is two feet in length and a diameter of 6 in. One vessel contains a uniform mixture of 80mole percent nitrogen (A) and 20 mole percent oxygen (B). The other vessel contains a uniform mixture of 30 mole percent nitrogen and 70mole per cent oxygen.
Ascertain whether this process is ECD, UUD, or something in between.
Determine the rate of nitrogen transfer between the vessels in the early stages of the process (i.e. before the concentrations in the vessels have appreciably changed). Assume the complete absence of advection.
Compare the result of part 2 with that obtained if the two vessels are connected by a truncated conical duct which has internal diameters of 8 and 4 in. respectively at its larger and smaller ends. Assume that that the nitrogen diffuses along the duct in the direction of decreasing diameter.
Relevant Data.
Pressure throughout the system
Temperature throughout the system
Diffusivity of the nitrogen-oxygen system under these conditions
duct length
mole fraction nitrogen in the two vessels
