Using an approach like Universal Design for Learning (UDL) creates an environment where learning is accessible, equitable, and flexible. UDL assists with the development of differentiated content by creating instructional dynamics that are adjustable (Polloway & Patton, 2022). An example of a differentiated engagement strategy that would be valuable to students in the inclusive classroom is promoting student choice by facilitating performance assessment options in the multiple means of engagement section of the lesson plan. Another way to differentiate engagement is to create a token economy for collaborative group work. Students receive an established token for fulfilling their specific role in their group. Students can be strategically placed in roles by their teacher. A third example of a differentiated engagement strategy is to encourage self-sufficiency by providing multiple formats for students to take notes (Polloway & Patton, 2022)
