This week, you will construct a full outline for your paper including citations and references. First, read "Outlining" in The Norton Field Guide pp. 335-337 and The Little Seagull Handbook W-3 under "Organizing and Drafting." You may also review the sample outline below. You can construct it yourself or use the template downloadable here.

5. Thesis statement Every[JW1] year, close to a thousand people are killed by the police. The problems become even clearer when considering racial groups that are more affected. It is true that some police rightfully kill suspects who endanger officers' lives, but that is not always the case. Regardless of race, police violence must be curbed. Some propose more training, and others propose stricter requirements on the police. But the best option is to rethink the funding that makes social services possible.While many feel that defunding the police would endanger society, redistributing funds would increase the number of public health workers, provide more targeted support, and refocus efforts to retrain existing law enforcement personnel.

While increasing public health workers is a great start, providing more targeted support to communities would increase community knowledge about supporting each other and the leaders of the community, thus reducing the potential for police violence.
2. Source #2: What evidence have you found that supports your claim? The article "Satisfaction with the police: Perceptions and related variables from an urban community sample" explores community dissatisfaction with the police.
3. Explain how this evidence supports your claim. Lower dissatisfaction with the police was found to increase the feeling of victimization in the community (Sani et al., 2022).

   1. Topic Sentence: What is the third claim that supports your argument? Although there seems to be an emphasis on community involvement, there is also the need to refocus efforts to re-train law enforcement personnel so that they are better equipped to de-escalate situations and to make better choices about their actions.
   2. Source #3: What evidence have you found that supports your claim? The article "Fear and violence as organizational strategies . . ." provides the theoretical framing of police violence and considers four broad themes that could help identify why police engage in negative conduct.
   3. Explain how this evidence supports your claim. Understanding the background for why police take certain actions can assist the public in more clearly understand how they operate and how to work to negate these actions at the community level (Srinath et al., 2022)

V. Conclusion[JW6] Paragraph

1. Note the most important point you made in the essay Redirecting funds will actually make the country safer.
2. Reiterate your thesis statement. (Be sure to state your thesis statement differently than you did in the introduction paragraph.) This more balanced view of public safety and social good will help all: the victims, the police, those that suffer with conditions, and the average citizen
3. A reflective sentence or call to action. In other words, why is it so important your the audience changes its thinking or actions? What is at stake? Rethinking police funding will do more than just help people. It will create a more fair and balanced society, one where the police and the communities they protect will work together to create a safer America for all.[JW7]

[JW2]Note there is NO transition into the first paragraph. There could be one, but transitioning into the first paragraph from the thesis is not generally necessary.

When writing your draft later, follow the 1+2 rule. For one sentence of quoting, you spend two sentences commenting on the quote and connecting it to your overall point.

[AMF5]For supporting claims #2 and #3, help your reader transition from one point to the next as smoothly as possible by using transitional words and phrases. Review pages 361-362 in The Norton Field Guide to Writing.There is also great information in The Little Seagull Handbookon pages 36-38.

[JW6] Note that no transition is generally needed into a conclusion. Avoid words like "in sum" or "in conclusion," though. Just restating your points will suffice for your reader.

I feel blank and need an outline. I've done this before, but for some reason, this is stumping me. I'm hoping seeing one will help me formulate the one I want.
