What lengths would one go to in order to save a loved one in need of an organ transplant? For many, there is no obstacle that could possibly come between them and saving a friend, family member, or themselves. The obstacles faced when in need of a new organ can be as simple as waiting on a long list for several months or years, meeting certain financial expectations, or traveling to a place with more availability. Some folks are constrained by time. The desperate feeling of potential death constantly looming can drive ordinary law-abiding citizens to consider an alternative to traditional in-hospital organ transplant surgery. That alternative is the illegal organ trade commonly referred to as organ trafficking. This lucrative business uses desperate and often financially struggling individuals for which they illegally perform unsafe medical procedures on, and there is typically a wealthy benefactor (Jafar MD, 2009). The creation of the black-market trade of human organs is driven by the demand far out-weighing the supply. According to the Health Resources and Services Administration, there are currently 104,234 people on a waitlist for an organ transplant in the United States with another added every 10 minutes (HRSA, 2023). With a lack of supply, an average of 17 Americans die every day while waiting (HRSA, 2023). There is even a tourism community based solely on travelers coming into a country to receive an illegal transplant and stay long enough to return without looking suspicious. The demand for new organs is getting worse as westerners eat poorly, seldom exercise, and drink more alcohol. The cause of organ trafficking is clearly a supply issue. The effects are: the exploitation of the poor, unsafe medical procedures taking place globally, and potential death.
