When mentoring someone, it is super important to be as engaged as possible so that we as mentors, can monitor their progress. Progress needs to be monitored to determine whether the current individual development plans strategies are working or not. A mentor can monitor their mentee by observing, meeting to check in with the mentee, and holding the mentee accountable. If the current strategies are only delaying the mentee's success or confusing them, it may be a good idea to adjust the strategies. Adding a different strategy or changing the direction of the plan can provide better results for the mentee if they are currently struggling in the strategy they have. For example. if my mentee wants to progress as a leader and his current plan is to focus on coaching conversations, but he is struggling, we may change the plan to focusing on labor and then circling back around to the coaching plan later.
Some of the benefits of changing an IDP include: helping define priorities, optimize the mentee's opportunity to achieve their goal, increase motivation, and provide clarity ("Complete guide to setting strategic goals (with examples)," 2021).
