I work in manufacturing, where data can be collected on nearly every action and activity. For this example I'll choose the most common data set which is ToA, or Time on Activity. This is the effective time it takes an individual to complete an action. These data sets have a control, the theoretical time, and a variable that our Empirical Rule will follow, which is actual time. When these data sets are collected, we will track the time several individuals will take to do the task on a large amount of points. For this example, we're tracking 10 employees doing one action 100 times. We know the theoretical time it takes a person to complete an action from math an engineer did that's beyond my scope. This is our baseline that individuals should be pacing themselves around. Now after taking these 1000 points we'll see the rule apply in the form of, competency of the task at hand (some people are naturally faster and slower than others), as well as time of day. You'll see a bell shape between breaks as it takes people time to get back up to speed and slow down as they get closer to the next one.
