1. Context: Your supervisor has been under alot of pressure the last number of months and you sympathize with her/his situation. You have also noticed that her/his workload has seemed to be making him/her more irritable. You have tried to be helpful in various ways to relieve the pressure but you also have your own workload to contend with. After mentioning to him/her that you will not have your report done until tomorrow, s/he responds with:

" You have to get that report done. This project is very important and I cannot afford to have it just thrown together."

2. Context: Your office is going through some renovations. You informed all the affected staff about a meeting to discuss where people will be relocated. During the meeting you are aware that George is not in attendance. This makes the decisions difficult, yet you feel that you must proceed. Half way through the meeting George stops by, interrupts the discussion and says,

"My work is far more important than these stupid discussions. We should have never moved to this location in the first place. Go ahead and do whatever you want!"

He is about to leave when you respond with the following paraphrase.....

I'd like you to only paraphrase someone's words back to them and not provide answers or next steps for them.
